Start-up of microaerobic removal of H2S from biogas in full-scale digestion of sewage sludge

The microaerobic removal of H2S with the supply of O2 (93% purity from an O2 generator) to the headspace of a full-scale digester (2400 m3) for sewage sludge was studied. The average H2S concentration in the digester under anaerobic conditions was 1840 ppmv.H2S concentration gradually dropped once the microaerobic conditions were applied,to an average concentration of H2S in the biogas of 180 ppmv with a removal efficiency of 90.2%.O2 rate represented less than 1% (v./v.) of the biogas production during the study.Residual O2 in the biogas remained below 0.5% during the whole microaerobic period and biogas dilution with N2 was avoided.Energy content of the biogas was not altered by the oxygen supply and CH4 concentration was 62%,both in anaerobic and microaerobic conditions.According to the electric consumption of the generator, operating costs of 0.0011 EUR per m3 of biogas were estimated. Therefore,by employing an O2 generator,H2S was removed at full-scale while maintaining the biogas quality and avoiding dilution with N2.
