Anaerobic digestion of post-hydrothermal wastewater pre-treated with hydrogen peroxide

The hydrothermal liquefaction process can convert wet feedstocks into bio-crude oil.Along with the main product, wastewater (PHWW) is produced with high organic content and toxic compounds.Due to these characteristics,PHWW must be treated before released into the environment.Anaerobic digestion can take advantage of PHWW organic matter content to produce biogas. To cope with its toxic characteristics,a pre-treatment with H2O2 has been suggested. In this way, this research aimed to assess the anaerobic treatment of pre-treated PHWW with H2O2.The effect of the pre-treatment was evaluated in terms of decoloration,COD reduction and nitrogen heterocyclic compounds concentration. The anaerobic digestion of pre-treated PHWW showed higher CH4 production, smaller lag phase duration and greater COD reduction compared to anaerobic digestion of raw PHWW.Moreover,a higher global organic matter removal was observed for the combination of pre-treatment and anaerobic digestion, suggesting that the studied process is an alternative method for the treatment of PHWW.
