A new protocol and software tool for standardizing biomethane potential tests: results of an inter-laboratory study
Biomethane potential (BMP) tests are routinely used to determine the ultimate methane yield an organic material can provide upon anaerobic digestion.Although several norms and guidelines for BMP tests exist,inter-laboratory tests with identical substrates have shown significant variation in measured BMP among laboratories, suggesting that methods are still not sufficiently standardized. In this work we developed a BMP protocol based on a recently published guideline, and devised a test of the protocol based on an inter-laboratory study. The on-going study includes more than thirty laboratories from fourteen countries. Each laboratory will carry out two independent tests with three substrates,a positive control (cellulose),and blanks (inoculum only),all in triplicate.Effects of differences in data processing will be determined by comparing results calculated by the laboratories with usual methods to those calculated using the online biogas app OBA.It is expected that results from this inter-laboratory study will show that we have made significant progress towards standardization of BMP tests.Regardless of the outcome, results will be useful for identifying remaining problems that contribute to variability in BMP measurements.
