Calibration and Validation of an Anaerobic Digestion Model for Process Optimization of an Industrial Granular Sludge Reactor

Application of advanced anaerobic process modelling in domestic processes has advanced substantially in the last five years, including the use of comprehensive chemistry models, inclusion of the phosphorous-iron-sulfur cycles, and novel numerical methods. The objective of this work is to demonstrate similar approaches to a full-scale industrial granular sludge reactor at Novozymes A/S,in order to optimize the reactor performance. The model, which includes sulfur and phosphorous reactions,is calibrated and validated using two data sets, which correspond to two different operational periods.Influent conditions are also reproduced using a model-based pollutant-disturbance influent generator.Simulation results reveal that the model in a satisfactory way can predict organics/nutrients/minerals transformations as well as the formation of methane and sulphide. The final version of the manuscript will include the analysis of different scenarios to evaluate potential improvements related to: 1) energy recovery;and,2) use of chemicals for pH control.
