Anaerobic digestion of Brewery Spent Grains: influence of retention time and trace elements addition
Anaerobic digestion is a viable way of valorisation for Brewery Spent Grains (BSG).Four reactors were operated simultaneously in order to estimate the impact of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and trace elements addition on anaerobic digestion stability.Independently of the HRT used, the Control reactors without trace elements addition collapsed.High content in Long Chain Fatty Acids (LCFA) and in Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) were observed on the Control reactors after the collapse. On the other hand, addition of trace elements ensured stable digestion.Slightly higher performance was obtained with an HRT of 60 days compared to 40 days.Biodegradability of BSG was respectively 62 and 67%.Nevertheless,the slight increase in methane production observed with the increased of HRT does not justify the increase of investment (CAPEX) due to higher HRT.In conclusion, trace elements addition was required to maintain stable performance but HRT increase from 40 to 60 days showed no significant effect.
