Methane potentials of wastewater generated from hydrothermal liquefaction of rice straw

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) has been well studied for the biooil production from biomass, however,a large amount of wastewater with high organic content was also produced during the HTL process. The present study investigated the CH4 potentials ofhydrothermal liquefaction wastewater (HTLWW) obtained from HTL office straw under various conditions (temperature between 170-320 ℃ with residence time 0.5 h),with focuses on the characterization of HTLWW,CH4 potentials and microbial community in anaerobic digestion. The results showed that highest CH4 yield 314 mL CH4/g COD was obtained from the sample 200 ℃-0.5 h (HTL temperature at 200 ℃ for 0.5 h),while the lowest CH4 yield 217 mL CH4/g COD was obtained from the sample 320 ℃-0.5 h.Higher amounts of hard biodegradable organics including furans and phenols and lower amounts of easily degradable organics including sugars and volatile fatty acids were found in sample 320 ℃-0.5 h compared to 200 ℃-0.5 h,which could be related with the lower CH4 yields of sample 320℃-0.5 h.
