Development of anaerobic digestion with food waste: Efficient methane production with ethanol pre-fermentation process

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste is considered an attractive alternative treatment. In this study,we described a novel efficient anaerobic digestion system for methane from food waste with ethanol pre-fermentation (EP).Firstly, the effect of EP on methane production was investigated.EP for 6-18 h before AD could increase 4%-23% of methane from food waste in AD.EP for 12 h was found as the optional condition. The ethanol concentration in EP phase was 4.89-folds higher than control.Meanwhile, lactate, propionate and butyrate formations were inhibited. On the other hand, acetate generation during initial AD was also enhanced with EP,which was 2.15-fold higher than that in control. Thus,EP was found to prevent the acidification, and enhance the following acetogenesis in AD.To clarify the mechanism of the positive effect with EP in AD,the carbon conversion in AD with EP was illustrated by using 13C tracer experiments, which also quantitatively verified that EP could enhance 10.25% carbon flux towards methane formation. Thus,EP prior to AD is a suitable method to establish an efficient AD system from food waste.
