Improved solid-state fermentative volatile fatty acids production from residual solid digestate using white rot fungi pretreatment

To improve fermentative volatile fatty acids (VFA) production from residual solid digestate (SD),regarded as low-biodegradable substrate, the white rot fungi P.sajor-caju and T.versicolor were investigated for their ability to enhance the anaerobic degradability of SD.The results have shown that the two fungi could grow on the substrate and that they secreted ligninolytic enzymes such as laccase and manganese peroxidase. In addition, the fungal pretreatment by P.sajor-caju significantly improved VFA yield from anaerobic fermentation of SD.A maximum VFA yield of 240 mg COD/g VS was obtained from the SD pretreated by P.sajor-caju in 6 weeks, which agreed with a 104% increase compared to the SD without pretreatment. It was concluded that P.sajor-caju treatment could increase the SD biodegradability in view of a further SD utilization for biorefinery purpose or as carbon source for denitrification in a wastewater treatment plant. The mechanisms involved in SD degradation by fungi needs to be further investigated.
