A new system using self-agitated anaerobic digestion and contact aeration process for efficient methane recovery and wastewater treatment

For more efficient food waste utilization,a new system, which was combined with a self-agitating anaerobic digestion reactor to reduce the operational energy and a conventional aerobic contact process to treat wastewater from methane fermentation, was developed. The performance of the system was examined by conducting a continuous experiment using food residue which was simulated food waste from commercial activity.Because the substrate has a low solid content,a gravity liquid-solid separation was conducted to condense the solid material in the substrate. In the anaerobic digestion reactor, stable methane fermentation of the condensed solid was achieved and a CODCr removal rate of 78% was obtained under the following conditions: CODcr loading rate of 3.0 kg/m3/day,temperature 55 ℃.Supernatant liquids in the separation tank and wastewater from the anaerobic digestion reactor were treated in a conventional contact aeration process.Average concentration of effluent BOD was 300 mg/L,which is below the Japanese sewage effluent BOD standard.Through the present examination,it was found that the new system can provide stable performance in methane production and improve effluent water quality.
