Specific Layered Structure of Anaerobic Granular Sludge Attenuates the Toxicity of Nano Zero-Valence Iron
The tolerance response of AGS to different dosage of nZVI with glucose and three volatile fatty acids (VFAs) as substrate were investigated to elucidate how nZVI affects the activity of anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) during anaerobic digestion process in this study. The distribution/formation of nZVl,contents of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) after exposure to nZVI were further explored to assist in probing the mechanisms. The results showed that limited inhibition on the activity of AGS was exhibited, and the extra hydrogen gas released from the oxidation of nZVI was presumably suggested to stimulate the hydrogenotrphic methanogenesis process, resulting in methane production enhancement. The microscopic analysis indicated that nZVI particles were mainly adsorbed on the surface of AGS in the form of iron oxides aggregation without entering into the interior of the granule, protecting most cells from contact damage.Further experiments demonstrated that surrounded EPS located outer surface could be degraded by nZVI,weakening the toxicity of nZVI.In conclusion, the special layered structure of anaerobic granular sludge was able to attenuate the toxicity of nZVI.
