Enhanced acetate production from syngas fermentation: the impact of pH and temperature
Syngas fermentation into acetate by mixed cultures is considered a promising biotechnology.Effect of pH and temperature on conversion efficiency, product composition and selectivity during syngas utilization was investigated in this work. With CO and H2 conversion, the maximum TVFA concentration reached 3400 and 3100 mg/L both at pH 9 under mesophilic and hypothermic conditions, respectively. The highest ratio of acetate to TVFA also obtained at pH 9 and reached 91 and 90% under mesophilic and hypothermic conditions, respectively.Although the production and selectivity is higher under mesophilic condition than under hypothermic condition, its also found in this paper that under hypothermic condition, the activity of methanogens could be better inhibited than under mesophilic condition. Thus, for maximum fermentative acetate production,it is suggested to operate with initial pH of 9 and under mesophilic condition, while for economic concern, initial pH of 9 under hypothermic condition is recommended.
