Removal of organic matter and nitrogen in anaerobic/anoxic and aerobic compartimented reactor treating domestic sewage

  The removal of organic matter and nitrogen in domestic sewage was evaluated through a treatment system consisting of two parallel vertical compartmented reactors.Each reactor had two compartments,an anaerobic/anoxic with flocculent sludge,aiming for the removal of organic matter and denitrification,followed by an aerobic filled with plastic-ring carriers aiming for nitrification and removal of the remaining organic matter.Both reactors were operated with hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 to 12 h,the first with recirculation ratio of 1.5 and the second with 3.0.The nitrified effluent of the aerobic compartment was recirculated to the anaerobic compartment without the addition of extra electron donor.The most satisfactory operating results were found for HRT of 12 h for both reactors.The average removal efficiencies for reactor 1 were 52 ± 15%,81 ± 7% and 60% for total chemical oxygen demand (COD),filtered COD and N-TKN,respectively;the average effluent concentrations were 119 ± 47 mg CODtot.L-1,50 ± 23 mg CODfil.L-1 and 15 ± 5 mg N-TKN.L-1,respectively.The removal results for reactor 2 were 51 ± 15%,83 ± 6% and 57%,respectively;and the effluent concentrations were 132 ± 58 mg CODtot.L-1,46 ± 24 mg CODfil.L-1 and 16 ± 3 mg N-TKN.L-1,respectively.
