Methane production from 30-100 year old sedimented fibre from pulp and paper industry

Treatment of pulp and paper industry waste streams was started only 30 to 40 years ago, before which many of the streams were led to near-by water areas. Thus, sedimented fibres are still found from the bottom of lakes situated near old pulp and paper mills and require remediation. These sedimented fibres have degraded over the decades and may serve as a good feedstock for anaerobic digestion. In this study, the methane production potential of the sedimented fibre was studied in batch bottles and continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR).The batch bottle results indicated that methane production from sedimented fibre was significant,on average 260 L CH4 kg-1 VS.In CSTR experiments, methane production from sedimented fibre resulted in methane yields of 130-220 L CH4 kg-1 VS,which could be stabilised and increased to 230-280 L CH4 kg-1 VS by using co-digestion of sedimented fibre and sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plant.Nitrogen was found to be a limiting nutrient in sedimented fibres.
