Comparison of different methods for evaluating the hydraulics of a UASB reactor

In this work, the hydraulics of an Up flow-Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor at pilot scale (518 L) was evaluated. This was carried out by introducing tracer tests (Li+) into the system at the affluent, and collected in the effluent and in an intermediate reactor location at theoretical retention times (to) of 10,8,5,4 and 3 h.The reactor characterization was made from the residence time distributions (RTD) by using the following methods: i) Analysis of the RTD curve, incorporating the dispersion number (d) by using dimensionless traditional models,ii) model of dimensionless axial dispersion, and iii) empirical qualitative relationships. There were found some inconsistencies between the three methods.Method i) evaluates the flow from two extreme conditions, piston flow and complete mixing. It was observed that the values of the model for small extents of dispersion (SED) are in many cases greater than those of large dispersion for open vessel (LDov). In the zone of the bed and blanket of sludge (BBS) it was found evidence of dispersed flow, whereas the other methods indicated complete mixture. In method (iii),some relationships indicated presence of dispersed flow and the others completely mixed flow.In spite of the discrepancies indicated,it is possible to affirm that there are similarities between the three used methods, suggesting, the presence of dispersed flow in the reactor, and completely mixed in the BBS.
