Membrane fouling in tubular anaerobic membrane bioreactor treating decentralized wastewater

A lab-scale of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR) equipped with tubular membrane module operated at mesophilic temperature was developed for treating decentralized domestic wastewater, aiming at COD removal with nitrogen enrichment in effluent. The purposes of this study were to investigate effects of volumetric loading rates on membrane fouling of this tubular AnMBR at volumetric loading rates of 0.25 kg COD m-3d-1 and 0.70 kg COD m-3d-1,respectively.The results showed that the performance of this tubular AnMBR was excellent on COD removal,i.e.,high COD removals above 90% and above 94 % at 0.25 kg COD m-3d-1 and 0.70 kg COD m-3d-1,respectively,as well as the average COD concentrations of effluent below 50mg/L.The results of tubular membrane fouling of cross flow MF membranes showed that proteins played a vital role in the membrane fouling. The SEM-EDS findings showed the presence of inorganic elements in fouling layer, fouling and cleaned membrane such as silicon, iron, phosphorus, calcium, sulfur and Mg most likely to confirm the presence of iron oxides, iron hydroxides and silica on fouling layer and membrane surface, these support the evidence of membrane fouling. The tubular membrane cleaning with alkaline followed by acid solutions generally found to be effective,as alkaline solutions showed greater effectiveness in organic matter removal however, acid solutions has addition ability of binding some metal foulants like calcium and iron which are major inorganic fouling.
