Methanogenic Activity and Growth in Low Temperature Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment Systems Using Cold Adapted Inocula (4, 15℃).

  We have developed an alternative cold-adapted (4,8℃),Arctic/Alpine inoculum to overcome the obstacle of limitedhydrolysis and methanogenesis at low temperatures when treating wastewater (WW) anaerobically.We studied theactivity and growth of this inoculum when fed on real wastewater at low temperatures (4 and 15℃) with as substrate.Cell specific methanogenic activities (4-15℃) comparable with those observed for mesophiles at higher temperatures(37℃) (≈2.0 gCODmethane.gVSS-1.day-1) were observed.Methanogenic communities acclimated to lowtemperature (4℃) performed robustly at 4℃ and outperformed better than those that were pre-acclimated to highertemperature (e.g.8℃) when both at high temperature (15℃).Our evaluation of the inoculum resistance to migrationof outsiders at low (4-8℃) and high (15℃) temperatures showed that the lower the temperature the higher theprobability for migration (archaeal migration rate at 4-8℃ 1.69× 10-5 death-1 > 6.44×10-6 death-1 at 15℃).Limitedgrowth and cell decay at low temperature treatment systems is one of the main reasons.This limitation could beovercome as growth kinetics at low temperatures (4℃) can become elevated to those observed at mesophilic reactors(≈20 days-growth coef.: 0.05 day-1) by manipulating the substrate availability.Replication of one methanogenicindividual requires the presence of 1105.7±9.4 and 81.7± 19 pgCOD.replication-1 at 4 and 15℃ respectively.Underthis feeding regime cold adapted biomasses are not only capable to operate and multiply at low temperatures but alsoto decrease the probability to be outpaced by invaders from the influent WW.
