Dynamic Membrane Bioreactor Based On Rumen Fermentation to Improve Hydrolysis in Anaerobic Digestion of Lignocellulosic Substrates
A novel anaerobic bioreactor based on rumen physiology was developed to improve the rate and extent of hydrolysis of lignocellulosic substrates. The use of rumen content as an inoculum and cosubstrate and the study of the microbial community during anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic substrate, indicated that rumen microorganisms enhance the production of volatile fatty acids only when acidic conditions (pH 6.0-6.5) are applied. These results and the physiology of the rumen fostered the design of a dynamic membrane anaerobic bioreactor to develop rumen hydrolytic bacteria to enhance the hydrolysis rate of lignocellulosic substrates and thus production of high concentrations of volatile fatty acids.
