Bioelectroreduction of multiple pollutants by biocathode reversed from domestic wastewater established bioanode
Biocathodes of bioelectrochemical system (BES) have great potential to be used in the reduction of diverse coexisting compounds in municipal wastewaters. However, the biocathode establishment directly or after enrichment with wastewaters generally takes a long time.To shorten the biocathode establishment time, polar inversion from anode to cathode has been proposed to attain functional electroactive biofilms. The inverted bioanodes had enhanced reductive ability to nitrate, nitrobenzene (NB) and azo dye acid orange 7 (AO7).Nitrate,NB and AO7 reduction efficiencies and rates with the established biocathode were significantly higher than those of the anaerobic and open circuit controls. The mixture of nitrate,NB and AO7 could also be simultaneously reduced with such biofilm. This study offers new insights into the rapid start-up of biocathode for potential treatment of electron acceptors-coexisting wastewaters.
