Biological nitrogen removal by nitrate-dependent anaerobic iron oxidizing (NAIO) process: which seeding sludge we can choose

Nitrate-dependent anaerobic iron oxidation (NAIO) is a bioprocess utilizing reduced iron to convert nitrate to nitrogen gas, which is valuable for autotrophic denitrification. In the present work, two continuous systems utilizing activity sludge (AS) and anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) were constructed to investigate perform the NAIO process. The results showed that both AS and AGS were applicable for NAIO process as seeding sludge.Herein,AGS was a better choice with nitrate removal efficiency (NRE) of 95.58 ± 2.29 % and nitrate removal rate (NRR) of 0.20 ± 0.02 kg-N/(m3·d),which was at a high level compared with previous reports. The AGS characteristics, including volatile solid/total solid, particle size and shape factors changed little after enrichment, with values in range of-14.75 % to +26.43 %.However, the AS characteristics varied greatly in range of-33.33 % to +330.92 %.These AGS stable profiles contributed to the excellent NAIO performance. In addition, unique nano scale particles were observed around the cells in AGS enrichment cultures, which would benefit the overcome of cell encrustation. After long-term operation, microbial successions occurred in both AS and AGS.In the terminal steady phase, the dominant bacterial communities tended to be similar at phyla level as Proteobacteria,Chloroflexi,Bacteriodetes,Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria. The dominant genus was Geothrix and Norank vadinHA17 in the enrichment cultures of AS and AGS.The present work will benefit the development of NAIO technology, especially for the seeding sludge selection.
