Occurrence of anammox in an intermittently aerated partial nitrification reactor

In this study,an intermittently aerated sequencing batch reactor (IASBR) was set up and operated to achieve efficient partial nitrification being the first step to start up the partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A) process, and several strategies were employed to achieve stable partial nitrification.During the maintenance stage, high nitrite accumulation rate (NAR) of more than 80% was maintained.Efficient total nitrogen (TN) removal of 66.5% was observed after operation of the IASBR for more than 200 days. The TN removal was confirmed to be mainly due to anammox activity afterwards. This research indicates that anammox bacteria can be enriched in intermittent aeration conditions.
