Enhancement of anaerobic methanogenesis at a short hydraulic retention time via bioelectrochemical enrichment of hydrogenotrophic methanogens
Anaerobic digestion (AD),an important energy strategy for converting organic wastes to methane,is limited in practical applicability due to the relatively long hydraulic retention time (HRT).A coupling process of anaerobic digestion and electromethanogenesis was proposed to enhance anaerobic digestion at a short HRT in this study.Microorganisms analysis indicated that electric-biological reactor enriched hydrogenotrophic methanogen, helping achieve high organics removal (71.0% vs 42.3%) and CH4 production (64.5 mL/h vs 3.4 mL/h),while the additional electric input of this electric-biological reactor only accounted for 8.3% of the extra energy income from CH4 production of this reactor. This study provided an economically feasible scheme to treat wastewater.
