Effects of Sulfamethoxazole on power generation in microbial fuel cells
In this study the effect of representative antibiotic Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on the power generation in microbial fuel cell (MFC) was investigated. After 15 days acclimation, the anode of MFC was fully developed and matured. The potential of anode could be maintained stable at-0.25 V with 1 g L-1 NaAC.With addition of 20 mg L-1 SMX in the 1 g L-1 NaAC feed, the duration of power generation was extended to 120 h which was 4 times longer than NaAC as feed alone. With the liner sweep voltammetry (LSV) test, the open circuit potential increased from 0.691 V to 0.728 V after adding SMX,and the power density was improved by 18%.This study presents a strategy for optimization of MFC power generation.
