Innovative Digestate Evaporation for Nutrient Recovery and Post-Processing

Recent expansion of AD technologies has increased the scale and total amount of anaerobic digestion plants worldwide.By contrast, land availability for digestate application is limited and transportation of surplus digestate away from production locations may be uneconomical. An excessive application ofdigestate, which usually contains significant loads of plant nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous, may impair surface and groundwater resources due to nutrient runoff. Thus,AD plants located in nutrient-rich zones will be required to invest in digestate processing technologies that ensure proper handling and treatment of nutrients. This article introduces a new technology that allows an efficient recovery of nutrients by means of evaporation and increases the transport worthiness of digestate.A combination of solid-liquid separation, new sequential evaporation technology and reverse osmosis shows an energy demand of 7.82 kWhei/m3 Input. The proposed process enables a volume reduction of 49 % and converts digestate into a nutrient rich fertilizer with high transport and storage worthiness.
