Electrochemical Nutrient Recovery in Anaerobic Bioreactors

　　Microbial electrochemical systems and anaerobic membrane bioreactors have been studied to remove organic carbon and recover energy during wastewater treatment,but limited performance was reported in nutrients removal and recovery.This study reports that by taking advantage of the electrical potential generated from microbial electrochemical cells,charged nutrient ions can be removed from wastewater and urine and recovered as resources.It can either be a standalone process or an integrated system in anaerobic membrane reactors to improve effluent quality.
