The effect of pH on the photo-fermentative hydrogen production with the biofilm on the surface of carrier

  Photo-fermentative hydrogen production is attracting because it could degrade waste,fix solar energy and produce clean energy.In this work,biofilm was introduced to enhance the hydrogen production due to the inner feature of the biofilm in which photo-fermentative bacteria (PFB) could grow and act better.The influence ofpH on the hydrogen production with the biofilm by Rhodopseudomonas sp.nov.strain A7 was investigated.Biofilm reactor (BR) could run better than the control reactor (CR,with no biofilm).The proper range for hydrogen production was pH 6 to 8.The maximum hydrogen production of CR and BR were 1730 ± 90 mL H2/L and 3028 ± 160 mL H2/L when pH was set to 6.86 respectively.However,when pH was set to 8 and 9,the hydrogen production of reactor decreased significantly.Thus,PFB were sensitive to the change ofpH so the regulation of pH needed particular attention.
