Digestate typology from common fertilizing-value parameters: feedstock influence and recovery potentials
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a well-known technology for waste treatment and bio-energy production, but digestate management is still a key challenge.Defined simply as the digested residue of AD,digestate refers to a set of heterogeneous matters featuring different biochemical compositions and physical properties inherited from greatly diversified feedstock and various AD processes. The relative quick and significant historical development of agricultural and industrial waste AD in different European countries induces different current national situations regarding the digestate waste or product status and can slow down AD development because of too expansive post-treatment to be applied to raw digestate before effective and efficient recovery. In this context, the objective of this study was to establish a digestate typology with commonly found fertilizing-value parameters: dry matter (DM),volatile solids (VS),C/N ratio,Total N (TN),P and K contents,N-NH4/TN ratio. With these seven variables,a Hierarchical Clustering Analysis was performed resulting in 6 groups among a dataset of 86 raw digestates (excluding two unrepresentative clusters).Four Wet-AD digestate groups were identified according to the AD feedstock: fibrous and K-rich material (e.g.cattle and poultry manure);P-rich and K-poor material, more biodegradable material (e.g.sewage sludge);animal waste with balanced co-substrate input (biowaste,crops/crop residues or food/agri-industrial residues) and pig slurry (co-) digestion. Two Dry-AD digestate groups were identified, one for highly biodegradable feedstock (organic fraction of municipal solid waste or biowaste) associated with a low VS content, and one for fibrous input, mainly from cattle manure.Establishing and understanding digestate typologies can help to a rational guidance for digestate recovery based on destination needs.
