Anaerobic digestion of excess sludge produced from high rate activated sludge systems

In this study, the excess sludge from a pilot scale high rate activated sludge (HRAS) system was digested under mesophilic conditions. For this purpose,a laboratory scale digester was operated for 97 days. The digester had a working volume of 6 L and it was operated under 20 days of sludge retention time (SRT).Organic loading rate (OLR) was applied as 3.6 kg COD/m3.day on average throughout the study. The results revealed that volatile solids (VS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were 65% and 70%,respectively.The methane yield of the excess sludge was determined as 0.94 g CODmethane/g TSfed, which was higher when compared to conventional activated sludge (CAS) systems. Therefore, anaerobic digestion of excess sludge from HRAS system could be applied as an alternative in order to obtain energy neutral or energy positive wastewater treatment plant operation.
