Can alkaline pretreatment enhance methane production from agricultural wastes while preserving digestate properties?

  In this study,the impact of alkaline pre-treatment on methane production from cow manure and on agrochemical digestate properties was investigated.Alkaline pretreatment was found efficient in lignin solubilisation,which resulted in an increase ofpolyphenols in the pretreated liquid phase.When untreated cow manure was fed to digester,a good reactor stability and a methane production of 205 NL CH4 kg-1 VS were noticed.The addition of whole pretreated cow manure led to a system failure during few weeks,due to a polyphenols accumulation which caused a volatile fatty acids increase (up to 6g L-1).Contrarily,when only the solid phase of pretreated cow manure was fed to the digester,a good reactor stability and an improvement of 19% of its methane potential was observed.Interestingly,except for NH4+,both digestates (from untreated and solid pretreated cow manure) presented similar agrochemical properties that had positive effects on plant bioassays.
