Effect of CO on Hydrogenotrophic Methanogenesis: Biomethanation performance and Microbial Ecology

In this study, the effect of CO on biomethanation process performance and microbial community structure of enriched hydrogenetrophic mixed-culture was investigated in ex-situ system under thermophilic (55℃) and extreme-thermphilic conditions (70℃).Results showed that the addition of 5% CO had a positive effect on methane production, with 18.3% and 18.5% increase in average CH4 productions than those of the control groups under 55℃ and 70℃,respectively.The specific methanogenic activity of the enriched culture in reactors with 5% CO injected were nearly 200% and 50% higher than that of the control group under 55℃ and 70℃,respectively.Microbial community analysis results also indicated that the addition of 5% CO increased the relative abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens and Coprothermobacte, which could enhance the syntrophic associations of hydrogenotrophic archaea with Coprothermobacte and thus promote the biomethanation process.
