Performance of an innovative pressure-mixing pilot Chinese dome digester
The Chinese dome digester (CDD),a major type of domestic biogas plant,is a naturally mixed, unheated and low-tech system that is mainly used in rural areas.Because these systems are not mechanically mixed they are usually operated at a very long hydraulic retention time (HRT) and low total solids (TS) concentrations. In this study,an optimized Chinese dome digester was evaluated at high TS concentration (15%) in comparison to the normal Chinese dome digester in a pilot experiment. The optimized digester performed far better than the blank digester. The average specific methane production during 38 days steady state period for the optimized reactor is 0.36 L CH4/g VS compared to 0.19 L CH4/g VS for the blank reactor.
