High-solids anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge and ammonia removal/recovery by stripping

  This study evaluated high-solids mesophilic anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge and ammonia stripping of the digested sludge for ammonia removal and recovery.At 9-11% influent TS,the laboratory anaerobic digester performed well,on average,showing VS destruction of 51% and gas production of 0.48 NL/gVS at 20 days HRT.At 12-15% influent TS,the performance was deteriorated due to ammonia inhibition,even at a longer HRT of 30 days.But it was recovered when combined with ammonia stripping of the digested sludge and its return to the digester,resulting in VS destruction of 53% and gas production of 0.51 NL/gVS.The stripping device was operated batchwise at 80 ℃ and initial pH of 9 for 2 hours,showing average ammonia removal of 83 and 62%,respectively,for the digested sludge of influent TS of 9-11% and 12-15%.The results demonstrated that high-solids anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge is feasible up to 1215% influent TS,if ammonia in digested sludge is managed at below 3,000 mgN/L.
