Improving degradation of full-scale anaerobically digested sludge in post aerobic digestion by ultrasonic pretreatment

Recently, aerobic digestion has been widely studied to sewage treatment plants (STPs) to further treat anaerobically digested sludge (ADS),which is called post aerobic digestion (PAD).However, the degradation of ADS is still limited during PAD.Here,we present a new study that using ultrasonic pretreatment to enhance PAD of full-scale ADS.The experiments were designed to aerobically digest ultrasonic pretreated ADS and untreated ADS by using of activated sludge as a digesting sludge. For the ADS with ultrasonic pretreatment,it was degraded by 28%,35% and 44% within the 5 days PAD period, when the ADS was pretreated by ultrasound (20kHz,10min) at 25W,50W and 100W respectively.By contrast, the untreated ADS was only degraded by 24% in the same period. The generation of inorganic nitrogen and increased percentage of dead cells proved that endogenous respiration process was conducted to result in volatile solid reduction. The ultrasonic pretreatment significantly improved aerobic digestion efficiency, which resulted in high ADS degradation.Economic analysis indicated that the ultrasonic pretreatment could be an economically favorable technology when the cost of sludge transport and disposal was above $60/wet tonne.
