Quantification of methane emissions at a full-scale anaerobic digester

Anaerobic sludge digestion at municipal wastewater treatment plants can be an important source of methane (CH4) emissions. In contrast to CH4 emissions from digested sludge storage tanks and from combined heat and power units,CH4 emissions from digesters are scarcely evaluated. In this study,CH4 emissions from the open sludge shaft at the top of a full-scale digester were quantified by continuous measurements for 28 days.A sound methodological approach was developed based on the flux chamber method.Additionally, biogas leakage points at the top of the digester (e.g.man holes, splits in the concrete structure) were identified by a GasFind-IR-camera.Measurement results revealed a strong influence of the organic loading rate of the digester on CH4 emissions. When the loading rate was doubled CH4 emissions in the shaft increased from 1 to 9.7 g CH4/(PE·a).Because of the short sludge retention time in the sludge shaft, only 10% of the dissolved CH4 was released in the sludge shaft.CH4 emissions arising from degassing dissolved CH4 and biogas losses at leaking points at the top of the digester (in total 20.2 g CH4/(PE·a)) were of minor relevance when compared to the total CH4 production (4,913 g CH4/(PE·a)).The applicability of the results to digesters with different construction design as well as mixing and loading conditions needs to be tested as part of further measurement campaigns.
