Methane emissions from municipal UASB reactors in Mexico

Wastewater treatment is necessary for removing pollutants in effluents such as urban sewage;however,it has been identified as an important source of methane.Thereby, quantifying its emissions is highly relevant in order to establish effective mitigation strategies in a global warming context.Currently,in many developing countries there are large uncertainties in the methane emission estimations from wastewater management, mainly due to the lack of reliable information, such as the actual volume of wastewater generated and treated and the operational conditions of the treatment facilities. In addition, the estimation methodologies, based on default emission factors,do not take into account operating and environmental local conditions.According to the above, the purpose of this work was to estimate in situ methane emission from four municipal up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors (UASB) in Mexico,as well as to propose more accurate methane emission factors for this treatment technology.CH4 emissions based on the IPCC methodology were overestimated in all cases,if compared with actual on-site determinations. The results could minimize the uncertainty of different methodologies and provide real data in order to improve the implementation of effective mitigation strategies and policies regarding Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from the wastewater subsector.
