Methane emissions from biogas plants-methods for determination, results and relevance for greenhouse gas balances
The determination of methane emissions from biogas plants has gained importance within determining the sustainability of biogas systems in recent years.Policy and legislation place a focus on carbon intensity in all industrial sectors and as such the quantification of the methane emissions from the biogas sector is crucial. There are several approaches to determine emissions from biogas plants and an increasing number of investigations published suggest strategies to reduce emissions. The work presented here is based on a report of the IEA Task 37,which will be published in 2017.The results originate from our own measurements as well as literature reviews. The intended presentation presents and compares measurement methodologies used, lists component specific emissions, classifies them according to relevance and last but not least,it states the relative significance of different emission sources methane emissions for GHG balances for several conceptual plants.
