Silver Layer on AgW, AgMo and AgWC Electric Contacts for Circuit Breakers
AgW, AgMo and AgWC powder metal composite contacts are commonly used in UL approved residential and commercial circuit breakers.Unacceptable contact resistance and temperature rise in closed contacts can develop after more than a few hundred switching cycles if contact material selection is not proper. It is a careful balance of contact material properties of weld resistance, contact erosion and switched contact interface resistance. To reduce surface resistance, there are methods to produce a functional silver layer of 5-25μm on the contact surface. This includes the processes such as (a) electrochemical etching of W, LT (Low Temperature);and (b) thermos chemical oxidation of W, LR (Low Resistance);and (c) Ag electroplating. The pros and cons of different ways to produce this silver layer are discussed and their implementation in production.
