Detection and Characterization of Intermittent Shortsand Opensin Permanent Magnet AC Machines

　　Intermittent faults in equipment, especially in elec trical machines in the field, are generally difficult to recognize and identify, until they have become well established, if not permanent.Detecting them cannot be based on the steady-state performance of the faulted machine, since steady state may not be reached.It is proposed that instead the inception and clearing of the fault be identified, using a multi-step process, shift-invariant feature extraction, Undecimated Discrete Wavelet Transform)and linear discriminant analysis.The technique is applied for different fault characteristics, and controller speeds.
