A Study of Passive Intermodulation in Degraded Coaxial Connectors
Coaxial connectors generally have slight nonlinear characteristics. The nonlinearity of connectors can cause passive intermodulation (PIM) interference. The connectors will degrade continuously during use, which will aggravate the PIM interference and affect the transmission quality of communication systems. In this paper, a nonlinear behavior model and a prediction model of third-order intermodulation product power of pristine connectors are obtained first. The contact resistance is selected as the index to quantify the degradation degree of the connectors, then the prediction model of third-order intermodulation product power for connectors with various degrees of degradation is developed for the first time.A series of PIM tests are conducted to verify the correctness of the model. This paper provides a theoretical basis for predicting the PIM of degraded coaxial connectors.
