Failure Analysis and Experimental Study of Railway Relay under Small Current
Railway Relay is one of the main electronic components in railway control systems for information detection, transfer, and power distribution, and its reliability will influence the reliability of the whole railway vehicle system. The traditional railway relay failure analysis method mainly focuses on the surface topography and pollution of the relay contacts, ignoring the structure and working principle of the relay itself. Therefore, in this paper, failure analysis and experimental research from a new perspective have been carried out on a certain railway relay which failed due to poor contact under small current.Firstly, the possible failure causes of contacts are obtained by testing basic parameters such as contact resistance and contact pressure, and analyzing the failure mechanism of poor contact with small current. Then, considering the working principle and operating environment of relays, the main causes of contact failure are further determined by static and dynamic characteristics testing of the relay and analysis of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray energy spectroscopy (XES) results of its surface. Finally, suggestions on the optimization of railway relay are put forward from the aspects of structure and working conditions according to the failure analysis result. The proposed failure analysis process and test scheme are also applicable to the optimization and improvement of other electrical products.
