Development of durable antibacterial textile fabrics for application in healthcare environment
Recently, there has been an increase in the development of functional textiles with antibacterial effect to airborne bio-particles and micro-organism in health and medical sectors. The inhibition of the growth of microbes in textile material surface can be achieved through biocidal approach and biostatic approach. In this study,we developed a healthcare textile with durable antibacterial activityvia optimizing theconventional and commercialized antimicrobial agent polybiguanide derivative-poly(hexamethylenebiguanide (PHMB).Pad-dry-cure method was used to coat the PHMB on the cotton fabrics. The durability for household laundering of the fabric samples was evaluated in detail. The effects of household commercial detergent and washing cycles were also discussed. It was found that the optimum finishing condition can impart the fabrics with excellent durability for household washing. The antibacterial behavior is still satisfactory after 104 washing cycles.Furthermore, both household washing and coating treatment were found to have negative influence on the hand feel and tearing strength properties of cotton fabrics.
