The Mill on the Floss,an autobiographical fiction by George Eliot, had aroused big concerns from literary critics since it was published in 1860.Some critics hold that the tragic ending of this fiction give readers a sensation of abruptness, and the floodwater has no symbolic and metaphorical value,on the basis of which this paper takes“foreshadowing— a technique of expression frequently used in literary works—as a viewpoint, explores the contribution of “foreshadowingto the integral framework of this fiction, and concludes that the ending of the story is by no means abrupt, but deliberately and ingenuously conceived by the author for the purpose of achieving an integral artistic effect of logically organized plot and well-rounded portrayal of characters.
