Moby-Dick:from Ishmaels Atheism to the Truth of Human Existence

摘要：

　　The religious issue in Moby-Dick has drawn much attention from scholars.This paper attempts to examine the religious thoughts of Ishmael,the narrator as well as protagonist of the novel,through an analysis of his speeches,monologues and behavior.The analysis reveals Ishmaels atheism belief that the idea of God is a figment of mans imagination out of his cowardice to face death.Thus,the novel presents humanity as the whole truth of human existence,and exalts brotherhood as the key to human existence.
