A Contrastive Study on Compliment Responses between Native Speakers of English and Chinese Learners of English

  This study compares the use of compliment responses by native speakers of English,and Chinese learnersof English through DCT(Discourse Completion Questionnaire),in which participants are asked to write down what they would respond to a compliment in a specific situation.The aim of the study is to see the distinctive features of compliment responses used by the two groups and especially observe the pragmatic routines used by Chinese learners of English and then put forward some pedagogical implications to facilitate the learning or acquisition of contrasting patterns of discourse and sociolinguistic features so as to stimulate a deeper examination and appreciation of the rich diversity of our cultural inheritance and to develop creative applications that explore this diversity in the 21st century classroom.
