Feminine Ideals and Tales from Shakespeare
As the classic of Shakespeare play adaptation for children,Tales from Shakespeare has been playing the important part of ethical education since its first publication in 1807.With close reading, this essay attempts to reveal the most significant part of ethical education designed by Mary and Charles Lamb for adolescent girl readers in their era: the expectation and construction of feminie ideals.By means of such core ethical values of Confucianism as Filial Piety,Three Obediences and Four Virtues, terms that are familiar to Chinese readers, the paper interprets in detail the inherent feminine ideals in the book, and reveals the significance of the Lambsadaptation.
