The Freudian Interpretation of Dreams in Strindbergs Miss Julie
The Swedish playwright August Strindberg established his reputation as an outstanding modern dramatist with Miss Julie, which demonstrates his preoccupation with the elemental and inevitable conflict between men and women—all the psychological, social, intellectual battles of the late nineteenth century. The design of Julies dreams is like an intersecting line going in opposite directions. At the moment of seduction,in the arm of sex,Julie falls down. She is motivated by the strong internal forces which propel her towards her fate, underscored by social-sexual images of rising and falling, cleanliness and dirt, life and death. The recurring dreams of Julie illuminate the plays motif and unify in a contrasting poetic metaphor.
