Rational and Potential:On the Plosive Perception of Labiodentals by Chinese EFL Learners
This paper is aimed at discussing the inner and outer factors contributing to the regularity of the plosive perception of labiodentals by Chinese EFL learners.First,it describes the regularity with examples and a table.Second,it explores the theoretical rationality of the regularity from different perspectives.Then,it discusses the practical potentiality of the regularity using for reference the acquisition of English labials by native and foreign learners.Furthermore,it puts forward two hypotheses: A distinctive feature may turn into a“semi-distinctive featurein the perception of interlanguage; Minimal pairs such as facing/pacing and voters/boaters may become“sub-minimal pairsin the perception of English labials which are difficult to distinguish.Finally,it concludes that the plosive perception of labiodentals by Chinese EFL learners should not be seen as an exceptional phenomenon,but rather a rule in the intelanguage system.
