A Study on Wang Rongpeis English Translation of Chinese Poetry:A Perspective of Relevance Theory
As an important theory within the field of pragmatics,Relevance Theory proposes the Ostensive-Inferential Model, focusing on the optimal relevance in the communication, that is,to achieve satisfying contextual effect through reasonable cognitive effort. As a cross-cultural communicative activity, translation should also consider whether the target text can constitute the optimal relevance in the target language,so as to achieve satisfactory effect for the target readers. As a distinguished translator and a researcher on English translation of Chinese classics,Wang Rongpei had completed a great deal of translation work, which has led to a lot of research. From the perspective of Relevance Theory, with Wangs English translation of Chinese poetry as the object of study, this paper explores how Wangs translation achieves the optimal relevance and satisfying effect in the target language at the semantic and cultural levels.Hopefully, this paper may provide some reference for the study on Wangs English translation practice.
