A Study of Chinese-English Translation Strategies of Culture-Loaded Expressions in Political Discourse

The research analyzes translation strategies of culture-loaded new abbreviations,people-first expressions and allusions in a political text with a purpose of understanding the approaches that can be applied to translate the special type of discourse. It is found that literal translation is prevalent in translating all the three types of culture-loaded expressions but differences in the frequencies of literal translation and free translation are quite varied for the three types.Other translation strategies like amplification, annotation or the combined method of different strategies are also applied. The purpose of translating the political discourse is to make the intended meaning of the source text clear and definite just as what is required in the translation practice of other types of discourse. It can be realized by appropriate choices of translation strategies in dealing with specific contextual information.
