Critical Thinking Cultivation in English Reading Instruction in Senior High Schools
Critical thinking has become one of the essential skills that a citizen must possess in the 21st century. The importance of critical thinking cultivation in foreign language instruction has been widely recognized.Based on the critical thinking framework proposed by Facione, this study investigates the status quo of critical thinking cultivation in English reading instruction in senior high schools through classroom observation. The teachers attitudes and perceptions toward critical thinking instruction in EFL reading are also explored through interviews. The results of the study suggest that teachers pay a lot of attention to the critical thinking skills of analysis, interpretation and inference, while emphasizing less on explanation, evaluation and selfregulation.Despite the generally positive attitudes, teachers practice in cultivating students critical thinking is restricted by various factors.
