Han dynasty bloomery iron smelting at Pozui site in Guangxi Province,China
This paper offers a recent study on the Han dynasty(206 BC-220 AD)iron smelting site and slag found in Guangxi Province,Southern China.Archaeological fieldwork was conducted at Pozui site which was on a hill top in spring 2005,autumn 2006,winter 2009,and summer 2012.A bowl-shaped furnace has been found,as well as many slag heaps, broken tuyères and Western Han dynasty pottery shards.Analysis using SEM-EDS of 16 slag samples collected from the site are presented. The results show that the slag is mainly composed of crystal fayalite as the dominant phase.Analysis of the microstructure of the metallic prills in the slag by metallographic microscopy shows that they were the products of bloomery.
